Foundations 3 · Part 3 of the Foundations series
For Spanish learners who know plenty of grammar but freeze when it’s their turn to speak
Even if you’ve been at it “on and off” for years and still feel B2 in grammar, A2 in conversation. Every lesson is 20 to 25 minutes, so it fits the week you already have.

You can follow most of what’s said at the table. Then it’s your turn, and the words come out slow while you search for them in your head. You reach for the nearest safe thing you know how to say. Someone kindly switches to English. And when they answer at full speed, you lose the thread anyway.
You’ve probably tried:
Underneath the frustration is something quieter. This was meant to be the thing you finally did: the family you could properly talk to, the trip where nobody switched to English for you. And lately you’ve started to wonder whether your memory is still up to it.
It isn’t your memory, and it isn’t effort. Five years of “on and off” is a lot of effort. The problem is what all that effort was pointed at.
Someone asks what you did at the weekend, and you tell them. Not a list of facts, a story with a beginning and an ending. They answer at full speed and you’re still with them. Nobody switches to English. That’s what completing A2 feels like, and it’s a lot closer than it looks.
Fluent speakers aren’t building sentences from scratch. They reach for phrases they already own, and you’ll get those ready-made: me gustaría, estoy a punto de, yo que tú, me llevo genial con. Each one is a sentence you never have to assemble under pressure.
Hours of unscripted Spanish from five speakers across Mexico, Chile, Peru and Argentina, with the hesitations and slang left in. By the end you’re sitting through thirty-minute interviews and following them. Not perfectly, but well enough to stay in the room.
What you love, what you find hard, who you click with and who rubs you up the wrong way. Without these structures you say the nearest safe thing. With them, your personality survives the translation.
Most real conversation is stories: what you did at the weekend, what you were like as a kid. Comfortable with the past tenses, you set the scene, say what happened and why it still matters, instead of answering in facts.
Linking words and relative pronouns let you connect ideas into something that flows. Your listener follows you without effort, so they stop switching to English to help, and you get treated as someone having a conversation.
No more deciding what to study today. 27 lessons in order, each with exercises and PDF notes you can come back to when a word slips. Plug in the holes, one at a time.
Most courses and apps give you clean, invented sentences and then ask you to build your own from the rules. So at the table you’re doing construction work under pressure: pick the tense, find the pronoun, get the order right, and hope. That’s where the hesitation comes from. And because you’ve only ever heard textbook Spanish, the moment a real person answers, slang and half-finished sentences included, you lose the thread.
We turned that round. Every lesson in this course starts with a real native speaker answering a real question, unscripted. You hear it once to get the gist, then again with subtitles and translation, so your ear does the work before your eyes rescue you. Then I help you spot the pattern yourself, and you practise slotting it into your own Spanish. We call it DRIP: Discover, Recognise, Intuition, Practice. By the time you need a phrase, you’ve heard four or five natives use it first. You’re never starting from a blank page.

I learned Spanish as an adult, and I remember what it was like not to understand a word Lis said. That’s still the point of everything we make: real Spanish, broken down by someone who had to work it out too.
That’s the method. The course we built on it is the one that finishes the job.
Introducing…
The final course of the Foundations series. Completes A2: ready for real conversations.

Foundations 3 is a self-paced video course for learners who’ve finished Foundations 1 and 2, or sit at a solid A2, and still freeze when it’s their turn. 27 DRIP lessons built on unscripted Spanish from five native speakers, so you finish A2 able to hold a real conversation.
Every lesson is 20 to 25 minutes, followed by exercises and PDF notes, inside the Spanish Obsessed course area you already know from Foundations 1 and 2. Nothing the speakers say is scripted. We built each lesson around what Nicolás, Tadia, Valentina, Anahí and Sofía actually said.

27 video lessons, each 20 to 25 minutes, every one with exercises and PDF notes. Plus the five complete native speaker interviews the course is built on.

Lessons 1 to 3 and 16
Recordar vs acordarse, the reflexive and object pronouns and how they stack, and the verbs that change meaning entirely when “se” turns up: irse, ponerse a, quedarse. You’ll stop tripping over the small words that make you sound like a phrase book. Nicolás starts you off with the car his mum gave him at 16.

Lessons 4 to 7
“I don’t know anything”, “nobody”, “never”, said the Spanish way rather than the English way. Then three lessons on our old friend gustar and its family: what you find hard, what hurts, what you love, what you’re missing. This is where you start saying what you actually think and feel.

Lessons 8 to 12
Mi vs mío, a proper recap of the two past tenses from Foundations 2 heard in real childhood stories, how to say you get on great with someone (or don’t), and the relative pronouns that link two ideas into one sentence. Valentina’s summers on a bike and a PlayStation 1 do the teaching.

Lessons 13 to 15
The door is closed, I’m on holiday, I was just about to call you. Three small structures natives use constantly and learners almost never do. Estoy a punto de alone will make your Spanish sound more natural the day you start using it. Tadia checks the stove five times before leaving the house; you’ll hear it.

Lessons 16 to 21
Hay que, deber and tener que, and when each one is the right one. Then the conditional, which I think is the easiest tense to form: what you’d do with ten million, yo que tú for gentle advice, and me gustaría, podría, quisiera for asking politely in a restaurant or an email.

Lessons 22 to 27
The genders that catch everyone (el problema, la mano, el agua), then “I have tried, I have lived” and when to use it instead of “I did”, with ya and todavía. We finish with discourse markers, the signposts and glue that turn a list of facts into a story someone can follow.

Plus
Nicolás, Tadia, Valentina, Anahí and Sofía, each around 30 minutes, unscripted, with full transcriptions, translations and annotations. It’s native Spanish, so it’s hard. But you’ll have heard it before, broken it down and studied it together. Come back to them at the end and I think you’ll be surprised by what you understand.
Put the 27 lessons together and you’ve covered everything up to and including A2. Completely fluent? No, and I’d never promise that. But for the first time you’ll feel you can talk about pretty much anything, and follow what comes back.
“Your method worked for me, and now I am finally clear on those concepts! The best part is that a couple of concepts that you unlocked for me, allowed me to have revelations in other areas of my Spanish. I feel like I took a big leap forward with Foundations 2. Now I’m really looking forward to Foundations 3.”
“I had been studying Spanish on and off for years. I’m somewhere between A2-B1 and Foundations2 has helped with my comprehension as it uses various native speakers for our practice. It has also refreshed some tenses for me and inspired me to take my Spanish to the next level. Well worth it”
“Foundations 2 reinforced things I had learned before, but I never felt completely sure I knew them. Now I can talk about past events with more confidence, and I no longer have to avoid the past in my conversations. I want to do Foundations 3 as soon as possible.”
“I love this course! I have tried to learn Spanish multiple times in the past but each time my learning would plateau and I would give up. The course structure has helped me stay motivated by testing my skill level more organically as well as provided me with a clear view of the journey to fluency.”
“The teaching was clear and well planned and contained a lot of useful grammar , enjoyable exercises, interesting videos with varied spanish accents. The explanations were easy to follow and the quizzes and practice exercises were very practical and made studying a pleasure . There is a lot of great content to re visit and I have learned and understood much more than I have from books and other sources in the past. I look forward to Foundations 3 !!”
“This course was exactly what I needed. Things were explained in a way that I was finally able to understand.”

…and the other questions you’re probably wondering about
Each lesson is 20 to 25 minutes, with the exercises separate, so you can do a bit every day or a couple of lessons at the weekend. There’s no schedule to keep up with; you go at your own pace. It’s built for the week you already have, not the one you wish you had.
The podcast gives you exposure, but it can’t give you a path, and “all over the place” is the problem most of you described to us. Foundations 3 is one fixed order, 27 lessons, each built on DRIP so a real native’s phrase becomes yours. One student went all the way back to Foundations 1 to “plug in the holes” and is now waiting for this course. Scattered effort was the problem, not effort.
Within the first few lessons you’ll have heard all five native speakers and picked up patterns that make your Spanish sound more natural straight away. From there it builds lesson by lesson, and how fast depends on how regularly you turn up. Aim for familiarity, not perfection; the phrases embed themselves with exposure.
Video lessons with exercises and PDF notes in the Spanish Obsessed course area, the same place as Foundations 1 and 2. You get lifetime access, so come back to a lesson whenever a word slips.
You have a 30-day money-back guarantee. Do the first lessons and the exercises, and if you’re not recognising more of what natives say and reaching for phrases you didn’t have before, email us and we’ll refund you in full.
What the course does is remove the reason you hesitate: you own the phrases before you need them, and you’ve heard four or five natives answer the question before you ever have to. What it doesn’t include is live speaking practice with a teacher; that’s what our live Academy classes are for. Think of Foundations 3 as the thing that makes those conversations possible.
Most of our students are over 50, and the course is built for adults: no streaks, no games, no gimmicks. Lessons are short, every one comes with notes and exercises to revisit, and the method works on familiarity rather than memorising. One student told us learning Spanish “makes my brain happy”, and I think that’s the right way round.

I’m British, and I learned Spanish as an adult. I know exactly what it’s like to follow most of a conversation and then freeze the moment it’s my turn; I did it for years, usually with Lis, who is from Colombia and speaks the real thing. Since then, over 50,000 learners have gone through our courses, and more than a million have listened to our podcast, which is probably where you found us.
Foundations 3 is the course I wished I’d had at A2: real natives, broken down by someone who had to work it out too, in the order that finally made things click. Finish it, and you’ll be ready to have a real conversation. We’d love to have you with us.
